Hi Shirasaka-San
First of all, I would like to thank you for your invaluable support to my wife during my arrest. I think your help made her feel that she was not alone.
I would also like to show my respect for the work you are doing for easing the hemp law in Japan. We need people like you in this country.
You asked me to write a little about my encounters with the police in Denmark. Let me start with a little general information.
I consider myself a peaceful and law obeying person in general, except for the fact that I like to smoke weed. I would never harm anyone else or put anyone in danger on purpose.
The Danish police are not the most polite force in the world. But as in any other country they are there to enforce the law the politicians pass. The Japanese politicians has passed an inhuman and draconian hemp law, but I must say that Japanese police treated me in a polite way. The Danish police however usually talks in a very unfriendly and impolite way. The good part is that they have very few and limited tools to enforce a liberal hemp law.
I have been caught with hashish 3 or 4 times in Denmark, I really don’t remember exactly how many times, and the reason is that you have nothing to fear if you get caught with small amounts, anything less than 100 grams will only cause you to loose your stuff, and maybe a small fine. No arrest, no court and no criminal record.
On 2 or 3 occasions I have been stopped on the street outside one of the many small “hash clubs” in Copenhagen. Police often hang around these shops and surprises you by jumping out of an unmarked car. They search you, and unless you have hidden your stuff really well, they find it, take your name to see if you are wanted for some other crime.
You are asked to sign a pre-printed piece of paper that says that you admit to breaking the hemp law, and the police have confiscated X grams of hash from you.
And that is the end.
Only problem is that you have to go home, wait for 20-30 minutes, look really carefully for that police car, go back to the shop and spend another 1000 yen.
The police usually don’t spend more than an hour at the same place, because the rumor spreads fast.
I remember one trip to Christiania, the local hash Mecca in Copenhagen. I went there on motorcycle. The police usually never enter the area which is fairly big (Hakuba village size) but wait outside to bust customers.
On that day I remember buying 5 grams. For some reason I had a bright moment, and I broke less than 1 gram off my block of hash, put it in my pocket in case the police would search me, and hid the rest in my motorcycle helmet between the foam and the shell.
As I stepped outside Christiania i did get stopped by police, 4 officers jumping out of the car trying to scare me, and I did get a little nervous, because I was stoned and did not want to loose my hashish (well not all of it anyway) They asked me if I had any hash on me, and I hesitantly answered yes, I did not want to sound too eager to give it up.
I gave the small chunk of hash, and he asked me where the rest was, I answered that I did not have any more (lie) he asked me again, and searched me. He asked me more questions about where I had bought it, how much I had paid and so on. I answered his questions, but since there are 100’s of dealers in Christiania, it did not make any difference. The Body search ended without the police finding the last 4.4 grams.
They took my name, made me sign that piece of paper, and let me go. They did not even check if I was stoned although I was about to, and did get up on my motorcycle and drove away, laughing all the way home.
To my surprise I received a letter from the police a while later saying that I was caught with 0.61 grams of hash, and this letter was a reminder to me not to break the law again.
I can add to this story that since 2003 the law has tightened up a bit in Denmark. Regardless of amount you will get a minimum fine of 300DKR now, but still no arrest, no Court and no criminal record.
Just last week a man recived 2 ? years prisonsentence for selling 87 kg of hash in Christiania, he had been videotaped for 6 months.
Well that is my encounters with the police during 15 years of smoking in Denmark.
Feel free to use the above info as you like.
Best Regards
