I have had MS since 1991 and it has only been getting worse. I have trouble walking and remembering things. The left side of my body does not function well, my leg won't co-ordinate properly and neither does my arm. Apart from that, I have been pretty ill lately. I have suffered from muscle pains and this has set me back. My husband and I visited a doctor who sent us to a neurologist. They admitted me to hospital for treatment, but that didn't really help at all. After that I started physiotherapy. They taught me exercises, but that gave me severe muscle cramps. The idea that these cramps were some- how related to physiotherapy didn't really make sense to me, but it kept on getting worse, so we ended up going back to the doctor.

We asked our family doctor if there wasn't anything else that we could do. We had read an article in the newspaper about the use of medicinal marihuana and several people had pressed me to give it a try. My family physician thought this was a good idea. This was about four months ago. I had a prescription for marihuana, so we could pick it up at the pharmacy, but it's 46 Euro for five grams and the insurance company does not cover the costs.

We started by carefully brewing tea from it, one gram to one litre of water. This would last me for five days. We only used a limited amount because the marihuana was so expensive. We did have the impression that it had an effect, but my general condition kept getting worse. Then they started me on additional medication, painkillers, and muscle relaxants. I also started using larger amounts of marihuana. Now I was smoking it, first through a water pipe and later through a regular pipe. I didn't like this. It did have an effect on me, but the cramps were so bad that smoking didn't have any effect on me anymore after a few days. As a result, I had to start using stronger medicines.

Because marihuana is so expensive, my husband quickly reached the conclusion that he should start growing our own marihuana, or else we wouldn't be able to afford it. We had to do something because my husband would rather have me using marihuana than all those other medicines. He prepared a room for growing and started planting. We did have to buy an additional amount at the coffee shop, but it was still a lot cheaper than buying it from the pharmacy.

The whole process took an unlucky turn. At one point my situation seemed completely hopeless. The pain had become unbearable and I was suffering day and night. We went back to the neurologist, but he didn't really know what to do about it. He suggested that I undergo a strong hormone treatment, one that might have a lot of side effects. We weren't very enthusiastic about this. Another alternative was having fluid injected into me that would cause a kind of paralysis. We thought.'We'll just have to do this, if there is no other way', but we weren't happy with this option either. Finally we decided on not doing it after all.

By sheer coincidence, we met an acupuncturist who asked me if I wanted to be his guinea pig for one session. We did it. We visited him and a change occurred after the acupuncture session. The acupuncturist established the presence of a disruption, a blockade of the energy Row and said, "Re will correct it with this one little needle". I said,"Amazing, it feels like it is start- ing to flow." My hands and feet were tingling. I can't really say whether the weed, the acupuncture or the medicines caused the improvement.

I have no definite way of proving this, but I'm under the impression that this improvement was mainly caused by the weed. I carried on smoking marihuana while undergoing treatment at the acupuncturist and this is what makes it so difficult to tell which treatment was causing what reaction. In the end, I was using three different things at the same time: the medicines, acupuncture and marihuana. I have cut back on medicines. A permanent change took place after the acupuncture sessions.

I actually don't like using marihuana. I can't imagine how people can get addicted to it. I don't like the herbal butter with weed in it either. We baked a 'space cake' once but it turned out very dry.

I have been using marihuana and medicines for four months now. When I can't rest, I smoke a pipe to help me fall The pain is a lot less, despite the fact that I only use half a gram a day. I have stopped using painkillers at the moment.
