AIDS/Glaucoma

Carlo   IT, UK

My name is Carlo Pangrazio, I am Italian, born in Genoa in 1950. In 1994, I was diagnosed as being in the last stages of AIDS and given six weeks to live. I went to the London Lighthouse, where I was given a room and special are. I was given combination therapy, consisting of 30 tablets daily. The medication kept me alive but I could barely walk and was vomiting 10 minutes after medication, due to the side effects. I felt suicidal and depressed. A synthetic form of THC, nabilone, was prescribed but was too strong and made me feel like a zombie. A friend at the Lighthouse gave me some cannabis, skunk, 18% THC. It lifted my depression, I felt strengthened by it and determined to fight my disease. An infection led to 70% loss of my vision.

I attended a conference held by the Multiple Sclerosis Society on the therapeutic benefits of cannabis. The benefits to AIDS sufferers had not been as fully recognised as the benefits to MS sufferers.

I then met Tony Taylor at Tony's Hemp Corner. At a consultation, he con- firmed that it was essential to change my diet to raw food, avoid yeast, wheat and dairy products. The second part of consultation related to cannabis. I . already knew that nabilone had stopped me vomiting and that THC was better than synthetic nabilone.

From that day, I completely changed my diet and began using organic cannabis supplied by Tony Taylor-The combined effect of these two changes had such a profound effect on me that I realised I should try and help my fellow patients. I proposed to Tony that I help him set up a more organised way of dispensing cannabis for medicinal use. I recruited patients from various clinics. Tony and I attended a meeting on the therapeutic benefits of cannabis organised by the John Maudent Trust. This was attended by members of the House of Lords Select Committee, and Dr Little from G Pharmaceuticals. That day, Tony officially announced his intention to supply medical cannabis through his shop. We appeared on a news item together, along with a Liberal Democrat MP, asking for a government change in policy in relation to medicinal cannabis.

I believe I would not be here today if it were not for cannabis and Tony Taylor's help. Cannabis has been vital to me in combating stress. There is some euphoria from cannabis, which is very important and should be seen as a real benefit for those of us with medical conditions, where stress could result in illness and death or where depression could lead to suicide. Secondly, cannabis is the only way to stop the vomiting, induced by the side effects of the combination therapy. Thirdly, cannabis is an appetite stimulant, and so counters the side effects of the drugs, which diminish your appetite. This is very important, as I was very thin.

My doctors have recognised how much cannabis and my diet have helped me. This is a statement from my HIV Consultant: ' Cannabis and hemp seed spirulina, and raw organic sprout have improved Carlo's symptoms relating to his HIV disease, cholesterol is within normal limits, persistent nausea and vomiting have improved. Has also had an improvement in sleep pattern, weight toss and chronic diarrhoea. As a whole, he has had a fairly substantial improvement in his symptoms'
